ResumoFor long time it has been assumed that the spatial and temporal variability of the rain regime in the northeast of Brazil (NEB) is associated to the occurrence of the upper level cyclonic vortices (ULCVs). However, it was not possible yet to establish a quantitative association between the rain regime and the parameters of the ULCVs. In this paper we investigate the role of the upper tropospheric cyclonic systems in the northeast of Brazil rain inhibition. We considered both upper level cyclonic vortices, which are closed cyclonic systems, and trough of upper levels (TUL), which are opened cyclonic systems. These upper tropospheric cyclonic systems are large-scale low-pressure systems with a colder center formed in the high troposphere and frequently occur during the austral summer. They present cloudiness in the periphery and absence of cloudiness in the center. In order to identify the occurrence of upper tropospheric cyclonic systems, we used reanalysis daily averaged zonal (u) and meridional (v) components of the wind at the 200 hPa level from NCEP-NCAR (National Centers for Environmental PredictionNational Centers for Atmosphere Research), and infra-red images from METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-5 and GOE-8 satellites. We used daily precipitation data from the Brazilian National Agency of the Waters (Agência Nacional das Águas - ANA). We evaluated the precipitation inhibition in three distinct sub-regions of the NEB (the northwest of the NEB, center of the Bahia State and the semiarid region) for the period of austral summer of 1994-2001 (849 days). In order to identify the presence of a cyclonic system over a sub-region, we defined the border of the cyclonic system in ζ=-2,5 x 10-5 s-1. The intensity of the system was defined as the maximum cyclonic vorticity in this area. The daily precipitation of each region was grouped into three classes, weak, moderate and intense, according to the distribution of precipitation in the region. The statistical analysis of the precipitation in the studied regions shows a clear reduction in the occurrence of intense and moderate precipitation events during the periods in which it was observed the occurrence of upper cyclonic systems over the regions.
